Bill Maher(?), the American Richard Dawkins. Mo Swagga!
Last night Bill Maher of 'Real Time with Bill Maher' was on The Daily Show last night. Half of what he said needs and needed to be said, desperately. All I know is the dumb redneck half of Comedy Central won't let me embed the whole episode for me to allow you to see the crazy verbal stunts flying out of the mouth of everyone on the show. Like this - let's just pretend dogshit is money and the park bench is the New York Hyatt.

Mr. Never Not Good. Thee Flying Lotus

Since my last post I have literally not listened to anything else but Flying Lotus. I am not bored of it, which is something of a quandary. That is to say that the music is essentially Dub/Ambient/Beat based music that by it's very nature should be a bit long and drawn out and flowing. I mean, it is, but it doesn't simply wrap you in a ton of electronic layers of blips and squeaks. No. It doesn't even smooth things out or lift you up and take you out of your own head. I'd go as far to say that it doesn't groove you to the point of at least nodding your head while you have your headphones on in public. This damn record, The L.A. L.P, does ALL of those things ambient hip-hop driven dub should, and then transcends that. The record is absolutely enthralling. The samples and noises he uses are so smooth that it seems at all points in the record it's like there is water running somewhere in the background. The music damn near melts you into a pool of soppy enthusiasm where you get contact high from the shit Flying Lotus is laying down track after track of this dynamite record. It does sound like what it's like smoking weed. Not the being high part. The getting high part. This record is liquid smoke you drink through your ears.
If you are in Tokyo or L.A. in the next few days go see him love. I know I am.
His last EP was all over Adult Swim. That may explain the Eric Wareheim collab (see previous post).
Intro for The L.A. jamz.
I watched an interview on his myspace where he explains what he intended to sound like on the record. You can watch it on his myspace, here. He done did it too. This music is unapologetic for not fitting into any current dub and dance trends that are hitting the record store shelfs. This is a case where introvert sat in his basement, made a few sick tunes, and set it loose on the the underground public.
I am reminded of the scene in High Fidelity when Dick and Barry are sitting, Barry with his face in his hands. Rob, the owner, strolls into the shop and after a minute of listening to what is pumping over the store's speakers, trying to talk to both Dick and Barry - both of whom are speechless and preoccupied, notices the new music and asks who it is. Dick says, "Vince and Justin,"
Rob asks, "Who's Vince and Justin?"
Barry says, "Remember those little skate fucks who stole from the shop the other day?"
Rob, "Yeah," and the limited banter continues until Barry, tired and in disbelief, exhales, "and it's really fucking good."
I'm Dick, Barry, and Rob.
Flying Lotus is Vince and Justin.
It's really fucking good.

Flying Lotus and Disgustingly Great Music
Eric Wareheim, of Tim and Eric Awesome Show, has put together a video for Flying Lotus. The video is hideous and unnerving and, rightfully so, you will not be able to take your eyes off of it. Cartoon fucking and just horrendous facial expressions.
Either way, Flying Lotus is coming out with a new L.P. called L.A. It is absolutely amazing. Just listen to the track, Parisian Goldfish, in the back of all these orgasmic light animations which look to be meant for M.I.A. 's new record cover or the kind of clothes Sacha Baron Cohen's character, Bruno, would wear.
Colorgasm.
This video below contains some explicit cartoon scenes, flashing lights and is FOR OVER 18's ONLY.
